| In 2008-2009, the Foundation for Effective Governance organized roundtables in seven oblast capitals of Ukraine to discuss competitiveness of Ukrainian regions. The roundtables Competitiveness of Ukraine’s Economy and Ukrainian Regions were held within the framework of the research project on Ukraine’s economic competitiveness in the following regions: Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Lviv, Cherkasy, Simferopol, Vinnytsya and Zaporizhzhya.
In 2009, the Ukraine Competitiveness Report, a joint product of the Foundation and the World Economic Forum, covered 15 Ukrainian regions. Therefore, along with its ranking in the Global Competitiveness Index among 131 countries, Ukraine got competitiveness rankings of the following regions: Vinnytsya, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Zakarpattya, Zaporizhzhya, Lviv, Khmelnytskyy, Odesa, Poltava, Sumy, Kharkiv, Kherson, Cherkasy Oblasts, Kyiv City, and Autonomous Republic of Crimea. These regions are different by geographical location, economic structure and cultural background.
In 2011, the Report covered all 27 regions of Ukraine.
In April 2012, the Foundation held a round table on competitiveness growth of Kharkiv region in Kharkiv.
Ukraine Competitiveness Report is discussed at the regional roundtables to initiate a dialog of regional government officials, business leaders, representatives of expert community and media about competitiveness of the national economy as a whole and each selected region.
The roundtables participants receive objective information on the national and global competitiveness ranking of the respective region as well as strengths and weaknesses of regional economies. Also, the participants identify promising regional industries with the growth potential and issues to be addressed first and foremost.
The Foundation uses feedback from the discussions and meetings with local authorities to structure ideas about new regional economic development projects (see Regional economic development projects). A region is selected by the Foundation if it meets the following selection criteria: the region’s contribution to the national economy, willingness of local authorities to cooperate with the Foundation, and availability of economic sectors with the growth potential.
