Foundation for Effective Governance to present Ukraine's Competitiveness Report in May 2008

21 May 2008, the Foundation for Effective Governance in tandem with the World Economic Forum plans to present to the public the final Ukrainian Economic Competitiveness Report. Apart from the country's position in the global ratings, the Ukrainian Economic Competitiveness Report will contain detailed analysis of the national economy, its strengths and weaknesses, existing barriers to development and ways to overcome them. In addition, the report will feature case studies which can serve as benchmarks for Ukraine.

The Foundation for Effective Governance has carried out the project assessing Ukraine's competitiveness in partnership with World Economic Forum according to the latter's methodology. Initial results of the project were approved by the management of the Foundation and WEF representatives at the 38th annual World Economic Forum held in Davos last month.

According to Natalya Izosimova, Director of the Foundation for Effective Governance, the project for assessing Ukraine's competitiveness will be a good platform for dialogue between state and local authorities and civic society aimed at developing strategies to overcome the problems identified and strengthen Ukraine's competitive advantages.

This year, the Foundation has supported a comprehensive competitiveness analysis covering not only Ukraine as a whole, but also 12 Ukrainian regions. This analysis was conducted for the first time in Ukraine and helped make a detailed and in-depth assessment of Ukraine's competitiveness and identify more precisely the priority areas for the nation’s economic development strategy.

The World Economic Form has conducted global competitiveness analysis since 1979. This year’s report includes 131 countries and is the most extensive study in its history. The annual Global Competitiveness Reports (GCR) study factors contributing to countries' sustainable growth and long-term welfare. “Economic policy, especially at the microeconomic level, needs to set priorities that reflect the most important constraints to competitiveness in each country. The GCR enables countries to move beyond abstract theoretical policy debates and identify the specific tasks ahead of them,” explained Michael E. Porter, Harvard Business School Professor, and Co-Director of the Report.

The Foundation has long-term plans for conducting annual detailed analysis of Ukraine's competitiveness on the basis of WEF methods and approaches as well as for including all Ukrainian regions in the study.

INFORMATION:

The World Economic Forum is an independent international organization committed to improving the state of the world by engaging leaders in partnerships to shape global, regional and industry agendas.
For almost three decades World Economic Forum has been studying global competitiveness. Annual global competitiveness reports present standards used by business leaders to identify barriers for improvement of competitiveness and discuss strategies to overcome them.
The Global Competitiveness Report’s overall competitiveness ranking is the Global Competitiveness Index (GCI), which takes into account both microeconomic and macroeconomic factors of national competitiveness. The GCI is based on 12 pillars of competitiveness, providing a comprehensive picture of the competitiveness landscape in countries around the world at all stages of development. The pillars include: Institutions, Infrastructure, Macroeconomic Stability, Health and Primary Education, Higher Education and Training, Goods Market Efficiency, Labor Market Efficiency, Financial Market Sophistication, Technological Readiness, Market Size, Business Sophistication and Innovation.
WEF has been analyzing Ukraine's competitiveness since 1997. Last year Ukraine ranked 69th in the Global Competitiveness Index.
