Participants of a Roundtable in Washington, DC: Crisis Creates New Opportunities for Ukraine’s Economic Development

Global economic crisis can create new opportunities for Ukraine’s economic development. This statement was made by participants of the roundtable Building a Strong Economy for the Real Ukraine in Washington, DC. US congressmen, political analysts, representatives of the Government and diplomatic service took part in the event organized by Ukrainian Foundation for Effective Governance and American The Hill, reported UKRINFORM correspondent.

Oleh Shamshur, Ambassador of Ukraine to the USA opened the roundtable. He expressed conviction that the recession gives a chance to Ukraine to make structural reforms, diversify exports, introduce more effective management at central and local levels, realize land and energy reforms, and address many other vital issues.

“Another lesson we have learnt is the understanding that no country can overcome the crisis on its own,” stated Ukrainian diplomat. He expressed hope for close cooperation with Ukraine’s strategic partners the USA and EU in a search for effective ways to meet today’s economic challenges.

Former Undersecretary of State of the United States Paula Dobriansky pointed out that Ukraine has a strong platform for building a really strong and dynamic economy. She underlined high educational level of Ukrainians, strategic importance of geographic location and huge agricultural potential among main advantages of Ukraine.

Paula Dobriansky reminded that Ukrainian leadership has already realized a number of important changes, yet much is left to do. Among areas to focus on urgently she named small business environment, land reform and improvement of laws. "However, I think there is an area that is really important for Ukraine’s success and welfare. Any discussions about economic prospects of Ukraine should be held only though prism of new economic security,” she stressed.

Paula Dobriansky underlined that Ukraine has to further develop relations with its regional partners the USA and EU. US Senator from Rhode Island Jack Reed confirmed this statement. "People in Ukraine and the United States stand shoulder to shoulder in addressing today’s most urgent problems – from stabilization of economic situation to development of democracy in the world," pointed out the representative of the upper house of the US Congress.
