Next to Gambia and Algeria

Ukraine ranks 82nd out of 133 countries in Global Competitiveness Report.

According to the final Ukraine’s Competitiveness Report prepared by the Foundation for Effective Governance and the World Economic Forum Ukraine is down 10 places from last year.

“Ukraine as well as some other developing economies appeared to be unable to mitigate effects of the global financial crisis”, stated the Director of the Foundation Nataliya Izosimova. “Along with Ukraine, the following countries lost ten and more positions: Botswana, Ghana, Latvia, Mali, Mongolia, Russia, Syria, the Philippines and Croatia".

So where is Ukraine placed now?
Ukraine is among developing countries in Africa and Latin America, next to Gambia and Algeria.
Ukraine saw the most noticeable decline in three pillars. First of all this is macroeconomic stability. In this pillar Ukraine fell by 15 points and ranks 106th. The next two pillars include financial market sophistication (a 21 point drop, 106th place) and innovation (a 15 point drop, 80th place).
Are there any pillars in which Ukraine has improved its positions?

Yes, Ukraine improved its position on three pillars. The country moved 5 positions on labor market efficiency and is now ranked 49th. It also moved 2 positions on market size and is now ranked 29th. And it is up one position from last year on infrastructure.

This is the third consecutive year the Foundation and the World Economic Forum have been analyzing competitiveness of Ukraine on the national and regional levels. This year we have analyzed competitiveness of 20 Ukrainian regions. Together these regions account for about 90% of the GDP in Ukraine.

And what are the regional results?

Kiev topped the national rankings as in the past years. In the global ranking the city was ranked 59th, next to Hungary and Panama. Kiev was closely followed by Dnepropetrovsk region and two pairs of regions: Zakarpatye and Lvov regions and Crimea and Donetsk region. Vinnitsa Region is at the bottom of the national ranking.
